McCarthy out, FEMA test & Epic layoffs

Oh my!

Good Morning Wilmington!

This has been a wild week for congress! Represenative Matt Gaetz [R-FL] submitted a notion to vacate the chair, Kevin McCarthy. Eight republicans is all it took–along with all the democrats. This is the first time a speaker was removed by any party, let alone his own party. Shortly after an email was sent to Nancy Pelosi’s office telling her to vacate her room as it’s being re-keyed to be used for “Speaker office use.” Meanwhile, Represenative Troy Nehls [R-TX] nominated Donald Trump to fill this spot–who is currently on day three of his civil trial in New York.

Needless to say, these are highly unusual times. You might call them Historic.

Epic Games Layoffs in Cary, NC

Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, is laying off approximately 830 employees, which constitutes about 16% of its workforce in the NC research triangle. The layoffs are attributed to various factors, including a decline in revenue, high legal expenses, such as their ongoing lawsuit with Apple, and a settlement with the FTC regarding violations of child privacy laws. Cary's mayor expressed disappointment over the job cuts, but the impact on the company's plans to expand its headquarters remains uncertain.
