PCP THUR MAY 2: Justice for Anna

IN THIS ISSUE: Showcased life of George Clark Jr.

THURSDAYS TOGETHER WITH YOU

Good morning Wilmington!

As I mentioned on Monday we entertained a dear friend over the weekend.

Just by chance we were on Wrightsville Beach Sunday and were able to watch the Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue tryouts! Wrightsville Beach has a prestigious team of lifeguards highly trained to rescue beachgoers in need of help. Candidates have to complete a 500 meter swim followed immediately by a 1 mile run on the soft sand.

Candidates running into the water at Crystal Pier. They will swim around the end of the pier and then head towards the jetty for the 500m swim. Once the swim is complete they immediately run in the soft sand for one mile.

Once the candidates every last candidate completes the 500m swim and the 1 mile soft sand race, they run back to Crystal Pier together as one cohesive unit.

After a short break the candidates participate in an active rescue and a passive rescue.

They then get a small break before completing two rescues: One active rescue where the acting swimmer resists rescuer and one passive rescue where acting swimmer remains helpless and rescuer must drag the deadweight of acting swimmer onto the beach. Important to note that veteran lifeguards ARE NOT GRANDFATHERED IN! So each year all lifeguards must participate in tryouts regardless of how many years they have been on the team.

If you want to learn more you should watch this great documentary, Ocean Rescue: Making the Squad.

If you missed the tryouts but still want to be a member of this impressive rescue team, Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue will be holding a second tryout this Saturday, May 4, 8:30 AM @ Crystal Pier on Wrightsville Beach.
