Yesterday was a wild day for Bitcoin. The SEC’s Twitter/X account was hacked and an unauthorized post was put up stating that a number of Bitcoin ETFs were approved. Bitcoin immediately jumped from $46,000 to nearly $48,000 before dropping back down to $45,000. Still the Bitcoin ETF is expected to be approved sometime very soon.

Today is the first day back for UNCW students and the first day for transfer students. Welcome back to those students here from winter break and for those transfer students, Welcome to Wilmington!

Insurance companies ask for 42.2% rate increase for homeowners' insurance, some face 99.4% increase

[WECT] The North Carolina Rate Bureau has requested an average statewide increase of 42.2% in homeowners' insurance rates, with some counties facing larger hikes. Beach areas in Carteret and Onslow Counties could see a 99.4% increase, and eastern coastal areas of these counties may face a 71.4% increase. Duplin and Lenoir Counties could see a 71.3% rise. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey notes the filing follows a 2020 request for a 24.5% increase, settled for 7.9%. The public comment period is open, with forums scheduled for January 22–10:00 AM - 4:30 PM, and emailed or written comments accepted until February 2.

Cape Fear Memorial Bridge lane closures begin this week

[WWAY] Nightly lane closures on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge connecting Brunswick and New Hanover counties are set to start, with one lane in each direction closing overnight from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through January 28. The closures will initially affect the outside lanes for platform construction and later shift to the inside lanes for a barrier wall. The preservation project involves replacing the grid deck and support beams. The N.C. Department of Transportation plans additional updates, and a news conference is scheduled before the eastbound lane closures. Detailed information is available on the department's dedicated webpage.

Red Wave Threat in North Carolina?

[THE HILL] North Carolina's redistricting plan, approved by GOP lawmakers, is expected to favor Republicans by picking up at least three House seats and potentially doubling the GOP's slim House majority. The plan has prompted several Democratic lawmakers, including Reps. Kathy Manning, Jeff Jackson, Wiley Nickel, and Don Davis, to announce retirements or face challenging reelections. Democrats criticize the redistricting as political gerrymandering, while Republicans argue it aligns with the will of voters. Federal lawsuits challenging the new lines are ongoing, but their impact on the 2024 election remains uncertain.
