DEQ Pushes Action Against Sawdust Pollution in Sunset Park
[WECT] The article reports complaints from neighbors about sawdust from Enviva Biomass and Basaga International near the state port affecting the Sunset Park community. The NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) sent a dust control letter to Basaga, prompting action. Only one Enviva facility has a dust control plan, necessitating two substantive complaints within 12 months for the Wilmington facility to implement changes. Investigations in 2022 confirmed dust from both companies. DEQ continues to investigate and urges affected individuals to report to the regional office.
