PCP THUR MAY 9: Hurricane Preparedness Week

IN THIS ISSUE: NHCS Temporarily Limits Classroom Displays

THURSDAY TOGETHER WITH YOU

President Biden recently condemned antisemitism in response to the violent campus protests. This seems appropriate; however it is important to know that the house recently voted apply the definition of semitism according to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s [IHRA] working definition. The NC house did the same with HB 942 “SHALOM Act”. IHRA’s (working) definition seems pretty broad–and as you know with legislation, words and definition are vitally important. Words like “Working” imply that it (the definition) is not complete. This is worth close attention as where there is definition, there surely will be legislation that uses it.

Speaking of freedom of speech, the NHC School Board has applied temporary limits on what teachers can display in their classroom (see article below). Hopefully this move was made to give pause while they establish thoughtful policy–and that policy will be established quickly. Teachers put a lot of thought and energy into what they display around the room and It is likely frustrating for them.
