IN THIS ISSUE: Hidden Gravesites in Maides Cemetary | The Expired License Plate Predicament in NC
Good Morning Wilmington!
I want to reference articles from Port City Daily and Star News–they both do such a great job with their reporting. The problem is I never know which articles require a subscription to view. Seems random and I could click on the same article twice or from a different browser and get a different result.

[WECT] Many Duke Energy customers in southeastern North Carolina are experiencing soaring energy bills. Duke Energy attributes the increase to factors like a rate hike, higher usage due to cold weather, and rider adjustments. While the company aims for transparency with itemized bills, some customers, like Richard Mcninch, remain skeptical, feeling trapped without alternative providers. Duke Energy suggests tips for reducing bills, including adjusting thermostat settings and utilizing natural light. However, concerns persist over the clarity and fairness of billing practices.

Maides Cemetery: Uncovering Hidden Gravesites with Groundbreaking Technology
[The Seahawk] Local volunteers, using Ground Penetrating Radar, gather at Maides Cemetery to locate unmarked graves, including family members'. Collaborative effort between Historic Wilmington Foundation and UNCW's Public History program aids in this search, led by Kathy King, a Maides family descendant. The cemetery, dating back to 1899, holds significant historical value, with efforts to restore and properly recognize its 216 burials, 135 of which remain unmarked.

The Expired License Plate Predicament in North Carolina
[WRAL] North Carolina has seen a rise in drivers with expired license plates, sparking concerns about safety and revenue. While law requires annual safety inspections and tax payments, fewer regulatory stops by police contribute to this issue. Chapel Hill Police, for example, prioritize safety over expired tags, echoing sentiments from other departments. Late renewals pose financial and safety risks, with late fees funneling millions into state and local budgets. Procrastination impacts road maintenance and inspection standards, posing hazards for compliant drivers. WRAL investigates the implications of this trend.
