Pickleball players want designated courts, eye vacant land at Empie Park
The Cape Fear Pickleball Club is on a mission to secure a permanent home for their beloved sport. Pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, has seen a surge in popularity, mirroring the local Cape Fear Pickleball Club's membership growth of over 300 members in just 18 months. The club aims to convert a vacant 2-acre grassy area at Empie Park into dedicated pickleball courts. While the Wilmington Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee supports the proposal, funding and final approval from the city are still pending. If successful, Wilmington could join other cities in embracing this rapidly expanding sport.
