Gov. Roy Cooper sends EPA a letter about GenX import

[WECT] North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calling on them to reverse its decision permitting the import of millions of pounds of waste material containing GenX to the Chemours facility in North Carolina. The claimed purpose of this import is for recycling to produce fluoropolymers for us in semiconductor and electric vehicle product, but the environmental impact remains uncertain. While Chemours defends the practice, emphasizing recycling and emissions control, the governor argues that it's unacceptable for North Carolinians to bear the risks associated with importing GenX waste. The EPA maintains that the import complies with federal and state regulations, citing consent orders and emission controls at the facility.

We learned about the importing of GenX from the Netherlands from NC Newsline.

State of emergency in western NC as wildfires burn hundreds of acres

[WRAL] A 431-acre blaze has already claimed two homes and other structures in Henderson County, North Carolina–prompting a state of emergency declaration. An additional 75 structures are under threat, while firefighting efforts are concentrated on structure protection and establishing fire lines. A separate fire in Cherokee County has expanded to over 2,100 acres but is not posing an immediate threat to structures. The North Carolina Forest Service has imposed a burn ban in 14 western counties to mitigate the risk of rapid fire spread due to ongoing dry conditions.

UPDATE: Burn ban issued for 16 additional counties in Western North Carolina due to hazardous forest fire conditions. Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits for Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Caldwell, Catawba, Haywood, Iredell, Lincoln, Madison, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey counties effective 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8, until further notice.
