Get Ready to Green Your Space: Cape Fear Trees Alliance Announces Tree Giveaway

[WECT] The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees plans a tree giveaway of 500 3-gallon trees on January 27 at Robert Strange Park in Wilmington. The available species include American Elm, Brandywine Maple, and Sweetbay Magnolia. A separate tree planting event is scheduled for February 10, with volunteers planting 60-80 trees near the park. Both events are funded by grants from the Arbor Day Foundation and Truist Financial, aiming to enhance the urban greenery in Wilmington.

Unconstitutional Cloud Looms Over NC Election Law Amendments

[WECT] A federal judge ruled that recent changes to North Carolina's election laws, enacted by Republican state lawmakers, are likely unconstitutional and should be halted before implementation. The contested rules, primarily affecting same-day registration during early voting, could impact the upcoming elections. GOP leaders have the option to appeal the decision.

Cape Fear Towns Wary of 99.4% Proposed Homeowners Insurance Hike

[WWAY] Several Cape Fear towns voice concerns about a proposed 99.4% homeowners insurance hike filed by the North Carolina Rate Bureau. The first rate increase since 2020, companies cite inflation and severe weather as reasons. Sunset Beach officials warn it may force residents to leave, especially those on fixed incomes. Brunswick County is asking for public comments on the hike to be submitted for consideration in the town council's February meeting.

If the insurance rate hikes are approved, homeowners could see the change in what they pay by Aug. 1.

But currently, they’re still in the public comment period. That lasts until Feb. 2. The Department of Insurance says you can send it a letter or contact it by email.
