MONDAYS TOGETHER WITH

Good Morning Wilmington!

I hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed the amazing events in spite of Saturday’s weather. If you’re bummed because you missed the Veg-Out Festival, you’re in luck because it’s being postponed until NOV 4 due to severe weather.

We went through a minor layout upgrade for the weekend. You may see some subtle elements here and there. I’m realizing that there are so many newsworthy stories and events that tend to happen over the weekend–at least for now.

WORLD AND NATIONAL NEWS

Well we made it through Friday the 13th, otherwise known as “Jihad Friday”–still, tensions ran high and even hit close to home. UNC Israeli professor approaches Hamas protest on campus and gets detained by police for instigating riots and violence. [Video]

Israel began their ground offensive in Gaza. U.S. sends a second aircraft carrier and Israel confirms that almost 200 people are being head hostage by Hamas and Palestinian militants.

After a year long battle with cancer, Suzan Somers from Three’s Company has passed away at 76 years old just before her 77th birthday.

Jim Jordan was nominated for speaker but might not have the support to win on the house floor–Meanwhile, Scalise withdrew his nomination on Wednesday.

LOCAL NEWS

WECT’s Frances Weller braves the waves ahead of Ocean Fest

OK. This is awesome! Frances Weller is officially my favorite newscasters and one of my favorite people. If you made it out there Ocean Fest did you happen to catch Frances?

Frances Weller, a novice surfer, met with Ocean Fest Director Mark Anders on a stormy day in Surf City, where the ocean waves were being churned by Tropical Storm or Hurricane Philippe. Despite the challenging conditions, Anders aimed to help Weller conquer her fear of the ocean. Two surf schools had canceled lessons due to the rough waves. With safety precautions in place, they ventured into the water, and after a few tumbles, Weller managed to ride the surfboard lying flat. Although they plan to have another lesson on a calmer day, Anders is confident that she'll eventually be able to stand up and surf the waves.
