City Council Approves Major Projects: Riverwalk, Office Lease, and Police Cameras

[FOX] The Wilmington City Council made key decisions on several issues during its August 20 meeting, including approving $1.1 million for Riverwalk repairs, authorizing a lease agreement with the U.S. Government for office space, and backing a five-year, $3.7 million deal for police in-car cameras. The council also withdrew a controversial proposal for developments in legacy districts and directed a housing inspector to declare a property unfit for habitation. Public comments included calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Mosquito Surge Hits New Hanover County After Tropical Storm Debby

[WECT] New Hanover County is battling a surge in mosquitoes following Tropical Storm Debby, which created breeding grounds in standing water. The county's mosquito control team is actively spraying affected areas like Greenfield Park and downtown Wilmington. While the mosquitoes have tested negative for diseases like West Nile Virus, they remain a significant nuisance. Residents are advised to eliminate standing water on their properties and use protective measures like bug spray and long clothing.
