Woman’s body found near retention pond in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A woman’s body was found around noon Tuesday near a retention pond off Jennings Dr. off Randall Parkway.

A Wilmington police spokesperson says they are waiting on a positive identification but they are investigating the possibility it could be a woman who has been missing for several days. Karen Molta was last seen Friday in the 500 block of Mill Creek Court. She was reported missing Saturday, August 19.

This is a developing story.

Japan to Release Water from Disaster-Struck Fukushima Nuclear Plant

The core of Tropical Storm Hilary is just a few hours away from Southern California. Conditions are worsening, with light morning rain giving way to heavier downpours. More than 9 million people are under flash flood warnings in Los Angeles.

Hilary is expected to cause "catastrophic and life-threatening" floods in parts of California and Nevada, where a year’s worth of rain could fall on Sunday alone.

NATIONAL NEWS

850 people still unaccounted for after deadly Maui wildfires, mayor says

…At the start of the search for victims, Bissen said the missing persons list had over 2,000 names. Since then, over 1,285 individuals have been found safe.

But the recovery process will take time, according to Bissen, as the number of identified will rise with the number of missing decreasing. He urged family members to contact authorities and provide a DNA sample if they had any unaccounted relatives as a result of the fire….

LOCAL NEWS

H2GO’s reverse osmosis treatment plant begins pumping water to customers

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - H2GO’s new reverse osmosis treatment plant in Brunswick County is now operational and is working to process millions of gallons of clean drinking water for customers in the northern part of the county.

H2GO Executive Director Bob Walker says the company is no longer purchasing water from Brunswick County. Walker says the county draws its water from the Brunswick River.

“As of [Tuesday] morning, before we started operations, the water that we were purchasing from Brunswick County had the PFAS contaminants in it,” said Walker. “Today, the water that we’re delivering is completely contaminant free.”

Walker says the water is likely free of PFAS compounds because H2GO is using underground aquifers as the source for bringing water to the facility, which is then treated and distributed to nearly 40,000 people.

Man suspected of Wilmington-area crime spree had a criminal history

Beer and college goes hand in hand — now, a local university is “dubbing” its own brand.

From University of Montana to Louisiana Lafayette to UNC Wilmington, universities across the nation are adding to the U.S.’s billion-dollar craft brew industry as beer-makers create one-of-a-kind sippers in honor of their collegiate mascots. Late last week, Seahawk Nation announced the release of The Dub Amber Lager, produced locally by Wrightsville Beach Brewery.
