North Carolina trial judges block election board changes made by Republican legislature

[WRAL] North Carolina trial judges have temporarily blocked sections of a new law transferring the authority to appoint election board members from Democratic Governor Roy Cooper to the Republican-dominated General Assembly. The judges issued a preliminary injunction, stating that the changes could harm the governor's constitutional duty to execute laws faithfully. The law, enacted in October, aims to increase the State Board of Elections' membership to eight, appointed by the General Assembly, potentially resulting in a 4-4 split between Democrats and Republicans. While Republicans argue for bipartisan administration, Cooper contends it's a power grab that could hinder early voting access and lead to contested election outcomes. The decision's appeal could impact the 2024 elections in North Carolina. Another legal battle involves Democrats challenging a law tightening early voting rules and eliminating a grace period for absentee ballots.
