NC Wildlife Federation Calls for End to Inshore Shrimp Trawling

[WECT] The North Carolina Wildlife Federation is advocating for the end of inshore shrimp trawling due to its detrimental impact on other marine species. Inshore trawling, unique to NC among Atlantic and Gulf Coast states, leads to significant bycatch, including flounder, whose recreational season was canceled after exceeding catch limits. The Federation highlights that for every pound of shrimp, four pounds of bycatch are discarded, harming species like spot, Atlantic croaker, and blue crabs.

Grants Available for Marine Sewage Pumpout Stations in NC

[NC DEQ] The N.C. Division of Coastal Management is offering $170,000 in grants for marine sewage pumpout stations to improve water quality. These funds, part of the Clean Vessel Act, support marinas in 20 coastal counties. This announcement coincides with National Safe Boating Week, highlighting boater safety and environmental programs like the NC Clean Marina and NC Clean Boater programs.
