Strip club owners blindsided
[WECT] Owners of Cheetah’s Gentlemen’s Club were blindsided by New Hanover Count commissioners decision to use eminent domain to buy the building for parking. “Our building is completely full,” Commissioner Dane Scalise told Port City Daily. “There are people driving around trying to find parking spots. We need more parking. That’s why we’re doing it.”
Commissioner Jonathan Barfield said the issue was not listed because it was “time sensitive” and issues sometimes arise between crafting an agenda, released the Wednesday before a Monday meeting, and the board convening.
State law permits the following uses for the use of eminent domain:
Widening or extending roadways
Enlarging or establishing public enterprises
Establishing, enlarging, or improving parks and recreational facilities
Establishing hospital facilities
Constructing or improving municipal buildings such as fire departments and city halls
Establishing drainage programs
Establishing access for the public to public trust beaches and appurtenant parking areas

Civil War cannonballs, swords and unexploded munition discovered in South Carolina river
[NEWS19] During the cleanup of South Carolina's Congaree River, hundreds of Civil War relics were unearthed, shedding light on Union Gen. William T. Sherman's ruthless Southern campaign. The artifacts, including bullets, cannonballs, and swords, were discovered as crews removed tar-like material from the riverbed. Noteworthy finds include a wagon wheel believed to have exploded during the campaign. Historical experts find the discovery of these artifacts a remarkable opportunity to enhance our understanding of history beyond written records. The relics will find a new home at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum after undergoing conservation processes. The cleanup, costing $20 million, also removed toxic tar and additional debris from the river, with Dominion Energy crews employing armored excavators as a precaution against potential explosives. State officials celebrated the project's early completion, emphasizing the importance of preserving such artifacts for current and future generations to learn from history. This discovery adds to a series of Civil War relics found in the region, showcasing the ongoing uncovering of historical remnants.
