PCP FRI MAY 24: Cape Fear prepares for Memorial Day
IN THIS ISSUE: Mask ban faces backlash

FRIDAYS TOGETHER WITH

Good morning Wilmington!
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, initially honored those who died in the Civil War. During World War I, it expanded to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was traditionally observed on May 30 until 1968, when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. This change took effect in 1971, when Memorial Day was also declared a federal holiday.
This Memorial Day, take a moment to pay our respects to the fallen heroes who gave everything for our country. You may want to consider joining the 60th Memorial Day Observance at Battleship North Carolina with Colonel Clarke and a 21-gun salute!
I am personally going to take a day off on Memorial Day from publishing Port City Pulse. I hope you have a great weekend and I will catch you on Tuesday, May 28!

NC Legislation to Ban Masks in Public Faces Backlash from Health Experts
[NC Health News] Duke infectious disease specialist Cameron Wolfe criticizes a North Carolina bill that seeks to ban masks in public. The bill, driven by Republican lawmakers, aims to roll back pandemic-era mask exemptions. Wolfe and other experts argue that politicizing public health measures endangers immunocompromised individuals. Critics, including former Surgeon General Jerome Adams, emphasize the importance of masks for health protection.
