Good Morning Wilmington!
Yesterday was a significant day for both gold and bitcoin. Gold reached an all time high of $2,100 and bitcoin’s price went past $42,000 which is it’s biggest gain since 2020. This is all related to inflation and the value of the U.S. dollar. It will be interesting to see what happens throughout the rest of the week.

NHC Board of Education considers dissolving Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee
[WECT] In a surprising move, Melissa Mason, Chair of the New Hanover County Schools Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, expressed her desire to dissolve the committee during an agenda review meeting. Mason urged the board to assess the committee's role, citing a need to analyze its strategic goals and progress. Board Member Stephanie Walker, also an EDI committee member, expressed disagreement, emphasizing the committee's vital role in supporting staff, students, and families. School Board Chairman Pete Wildeboer highlighted the potential impact on the 2022-2027 strategic plan, where EDI is a key focus. Board Member Josie Barnhart argued against the need for a district-level EDI committee, suggesting the board can align the strategic plan with state and federal standards without it. The board's Republican majority, potentially having enough votes to dissolve the committee, raises concerns about the EDI department's future. The matter will be discussed further in the upcoming board meeting tonight at 5PM

New gun and drug laws
(WECT) In North Carolina, as of December 1, several new laws have come into effect, including changes related to gun regulations and drug trafficking. Senate Bill 41, introduced by State Senator Danny Britt Jr., now allows concealed carry permit holders to bring firearms into places of worship that also house schools. Proponents argue that it grants law-abiding citizens more rights and opportunities for self-defense. However, opponents, such as Jill Hopman of the New Hanover County Democrats, express concerns about potential risks to children and argue that the bill prioritizes the gun lobby over the safety of families. The law also initiates a two-year statewide campaign to educate the public about safe storage and gun locks.
Another notable law, Senate Bill 189, targets drug trafficking by significantly increasing fines for individuals convicted of trafficking in heroin, fentanyl, or carfentanil. The fine for those found with 4-14 grams of these substances has been raised from $50,000 to $500,000, marking a 900% increase. This legislative move aims to deter traffickers from distributing the lethal drug fentanyl, a potent substance responsible for numerous overdose deaths. Barbara Walsh, who lost her daughter to fentanyl poisoning, believes that the increased fine will serve as a deterrent and potentially save lives. Walsh, who founded the Fentanyl Victims Network of North Carolina, sees the law as a way to pay it forward and prevent further tragedies caused by fentanyl-related deaths in the state.
