North Carolina Black and Latino Voters Challenge GOP-Drawn Districts

[WECT] North Carolina Black and Latino voters have filed a federal lawsuit challenging newly drawn congressional districts by Republican state legislators. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court, alleges that GOP leaders intentionally weakened minority voting power in violation of the U.S. Constitution. The lawsuit contends that the redistricting plan exacerbates historical voting discrimination and disparities in political representation for minority populations. Republican defendants, including State House Speaker Tim Moore, dismiss the claims as baseless, asserting confidence in using the contested maps for the upcoming elections.

[WWAY]In a contentious 4-2 vote on December 5th, the New Hanover County Board of Education decided to dissolve the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee. Board member Melissa Mason, also the committee's chair, argued it redundant given the existence of other groups. However, member Stephanie Kraybill contested, asserting the committee's role in ensuring student safety. Community members echoed concerns during the board meeting, stating that racial and economic disparities in county schools persist.
