Applicants warned of delays at federal student loan application site
[WCSC] The U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid office has initiated a "soft launch" of the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on its website. However, families applying for financial aid may experience "pauses" during this period, allowing the office to monitor site performance and address potential issues. The application information will not be shared with colleges until late January, impacting the timeline for aid determination. Some users have criticized the move, expressing frustration over delays and emphasizing the urgency for student-athletes to complete their applications promptly.

Five new nations join BRICS agreement–Argentina announces they will not join
BRICS represents an informal association of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, fostering cooperation in economic development, politics, and global issues. While not a formal agreement, it aims to enhance trade, investment, and political coordination among member nations. The New Development Bank, established by BRICS, finances infrastructure projects. The grouping acts as a platform for these emerging economies to jointly address common challenges, advocate for multipolarity, and discuss global governance reforms. Saudi, Iran, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia recently joined with BRICS and another 30 nations have expressed interest in joining while Argentina declines. This all signals momentum in the de-dollarization of the world’s trade currencies.

Starting Jan 1 tax credits available for EV purchase
[WRAL] Starting January 1, 2024, changes to the federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credit will focus on domestically produced vehicles, excluding certain EVs with internationally sourced components. The tax credit, capped at $7,500, will exclude vehicles with components or minerals from "foreign entities of concern" (FEOC), such as China, Iran, North Korea, or Russia. The Biden administration aims to promote EV adoption while reducing reliance on foreign components, especially from China. The tax credit will also be redeemable as a point-of-sale rebate, making EVs more affordable by reducing the purchase price at the time of sale.
